For many homeowners, DIY home hardening projects are an empowering way to tackle mitigation with hands-on work, enhancing the safety of your home while cutting labor costs.
With home hardening playing a huge role in home ignition resistance, Wildfire Partners has put together a two-part video series demonstrating key home retrofits to protect your home from ember showers.
Dig into home hardening by Protecting Home Base and/or mitigating The First Five Feet around your home using our easy-to-follow tutorials. These video guides will explain the “why” behind these actions, provide a visual how-to, and outline your material needs.
Protect Home Base

Did you know that 80-90% of homes that burn in a wildfire are started by embers blown in from over a mile away? During an ember shower, the base of your exterior walls is a prime ignition point. Clearing and protecting the bottom 6 inches where siding meets the ground — paired with routine debris removal — is one of the best ways to protect your home.
The First Five Feet

When it comes to home ignition, your structure is more likely to burn if combustible material is present within the first five feet of your home’s exterior. To prevent embers from igniting this area, it’s best to limit vegetation and create a noncombustible surface. By installing a five-foot noncombustible zone around your home, you can create an armored barrier with limited combustible material for embers to ignite.
