Zone 1a (also referred to as the Immediate Zone) is the defensible space zone closest to your home. It includes the first 3-5 feet around your home’s exterior walls and attachments. Combustible materials and vegetation around your home will increase its risk of catching fire. By installing a noncombustible barrier, you provide a defense for your home against direct contact with flames and ember showers. This video demonstrates the importance of Zone 1a.
Openings underneath your floor area will also make your home more vulnerable to fire or embers. Mitigating these spaces helps protect your home against these risks.
The photo gallery below shows examples of retrofits you can make to Zone 1a to safeguard your home from the threat of approaching wildfire.
