Strategic Fuels Mitigation Grant Program

This grant opportunity is designed to increase the pace and scale of fuels mitigation across the county. These funds support large-scale forest and grasslands management projects to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire, protect critical watersheds and infrastructure, and promote resilient ecosystems.

Eligibility Criteria

  • All applicants must be located in Boulder County.
  • Fire Protection Districts, Homeowner’s Associations, local governments, non-profits and community groups can apply.
  • These grants are not available to individuals.

Program Details

What does the SMFG program fund?

SFMG funds fuel mitigation projects (forest and grasslands) and the development of or updates to Community Wildfire Protection Plans.

How much money is available?

There is $2 milion available each year over two application cycles: Spring and Fall.

Requirements:

Applicants are required to provide 50% matching funds in order to qualify. This can include other state, federal, and local grants or other funding sources. Landowner contributions (private or HOA funds) are encouraged.

Project Completion:

There is a 3-year project completion deadline for fuels mitigation projects and a 2-year deadline for CWPP planning projects.

In Brief: Project Steps
  1. Work with your project manager and partners to begin project planning.
  2. Contact SFMG staff to schedule a site visit.
  3. Finalize your project plan and scope of work.
  4. Submit an application.
  5. Receive notification 8-10 weeks after submission deadline.
  6. Provide tax documentation.
  7. Contract is signed by both parties.
  8. Project work may commence.
